Jenks is a city located in Tulsa County, Oklahoma with an estimated population of more than 17,000 people. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the state and is nestled along the Arkansas River and U.S. Route 75.
The Midland Valley Railroad, between Tulsa and Muskogee, established Jenks in 1904 as a community site. It was named after William Henry Jenks, the owner of the Midland Valley Railroad. Early industry included petroleum, as there were major discoveries made in the area resulting in oil depots.
Current major employers in Jenks include Kimberly-Clark, which built a manufacturing facility in the city in the 1980s. Other prominent employers include Green Country Energy, Public Service Company, Tulsa Winch and Continental Wire Cloth.
Popular attractions in Jenks include the Oklahoma Aquarium, and the city’s downtown shops, boutiques and restaurants. The city has been nicknamed the “Antique Capital of Oklahoma” because of its many antique stores situated along Main Street, which allow visitors to park and browse vintage items.
Festivities in Jenks include the Art of Main, which occurs on the second Saturday of each October, in downtown, drawing close to 10,000 visitors annually.
Jenks School District is one of the largest in the state and encompasses a large portion of southwest Tulsa. The South County Leader serves as the city’s newspaper.
