Any time we see a letter to the editor in a local newspaper supporting the Social Security Administration, we like to report about it, as positive news coverage can be hard to find, as many people do not have a good grasp on how programs are funded or whom they benefit.
Recently, Maria Diaz, a public affairs specialist for the SSA, wrote a letter to the Palm Beach Post in Florida, detailing the importance of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
“Some people mistakenly think that beneficiaries are “on the dole” and getting easy money for minor impairments. That’s not the case,” Diaz wrote. “There are two ways to understand the truth about disability. One is by looking at the facts. The other is by getting to know some of the people who make up the many faces of disability.”
Diaz then detailed how the SSA uses a very strict process when determining disability. Keep in mind, to obtain benefits, you must show complete disability, meaning you cannot work. The SSA will expect that an applicant can do sedentary jobs, even if he or she cannot perform the physical demands required of some forms of labor. Thus, any stories you read about people defrauding the system, you should take with a grain of salt. Fraud cases are actually quite low.
“Because the eligibility requirements are so strict, Social Security disability beneficiaries are among the most severely impaired people in the country and tend to have high death rates,” Diaz wrote. “We want to make sure that we are able to help those who truly need it the most.”
Additionally, Diaz provided a link to the SSA’s disability facts and faces website.
