Tulsa Disability Lawyer: There Are Exemptions for Paperless Switch

With Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI or SSD) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments switching to a paperless option on March 1, it is important for recipients to know that there are a couple of exemptions to the change.

Most people will be required to go to the paperless option; however, the following people are exempt:

  • People older than 91
  • People with mental issues that prevent them from being able to make the switch
  • People in rural areas without direct deposit capabilities

Since the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced benefits would go paperless, roughly 100,000 people have applied for an exemption.

A U.S. Treasury representative told Fox News that most of the people who have applied for the exemption are uncomfortable with the paperless change, and only a small percentage have actually been granted a waiver.

If you have not switched to the paperless option yet, you can switch by calling 1-800-333-1795 or visiting www.GoDirect.org.
