Tulsa Disability Lawyer: Governor Appoints Panelists to Assist Developmentally Disabled

Last month, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin appointed 10 members to a panel dedicated to looking into how the state can better treat the developmentally disabled. The panel will investigate how to help the developmentally disabled utilize state services, seek education and apply for benefits. The panel will also look at ways to ease the wait list of more than 7,000 people seeking services from the Department of Human Services.

“Our goal as a state is to be a resource that allows men, women and children with intellectual disabilities the ability to realize their full potential, to live their own lives, and to do so as independently as possible,” Fallin told the Oklahoman. “This new panel is composed of people with personal and professional experiences that can help us to pursue this goal and improve services.”

More than 60,000 Oklahoma residents have developmental disabilities. Many of them qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). In order to assist people in understanding the differences between the two programs, we developed an SSDI versus SSI page.
