Social Security Tips: Correcting Your Name, Birthday and Info

Have you run into problems when you were attempting to seek out federal benefits due to someone else sharing your name? Have you had complications with the Social Security Administration due to outdated information?

If you need to update your name or contact information with the SSA, or there are errors with the current information the agency has on file, you can always contact it directly.

Some of these documents include earning statements, driver’s licenses and/or birth certificates. Additionally, you may be asked to provide your Social Security number to request a change. It is important that you keep your personal information as up to date as possible with the agency to avoid complications in the future.

We have read many stories about people attempting to receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, who have been denied services or run into complications due to having old or incorrect information on file. Some of this is avoidable, as people have not taken steps to ensure that their information is current and correct.

Keeping your information up to date may also help alleviate fraud that may occur, if someone else tries to use your identifying items to gain federal benefits, as you may receive notices. This is especially useful if you have a common name.

Davy Crockett Has Issues with Social Security

We bring this subject up because recently we read a humorous article about a Tennessee man named Davy Crockett, who attended a question and answer session with President Barack Obama in Nashville.

Crockett said that he had applied to receive Social Security benefits and was denied four times, asking Obama if he could expedite the process for him. Obama said that he would look into the issue and sang the theme song from the Crockett television series that aired during the 1950s.

Aside from the humor, the discussion made many in the media and Social Security circles wonder if Crockett had run into issues in part because of his famous name.
