One Program That Cuts Costs Without Hurting People

On Monday we discussed cost-cutting measures that may in fact hurt the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) ability to help disabled Americans. However, some programs that are already in place can be incredibly effective at reducing unnecessary costs while still providing permanently disabled Americans with the help they need. The Ticket to Work Program, started in 1999, is one such example.

This free program aims to:

  • Offer people on disability benefits options and support as they consider reentry into the work force
  • Increase financial independence
  • Ultimately reduce the number of people on disability benefits

This program is targeted toward adults who receive disability benefits from the SSA. Beneficiaries can choose to work with an Employment Network or State Vocational Rehabilitation agency to receive counseling, explore work options and find and hopefully maintain employment. Instead of making the benefits process more lengthy and difficult, the Ticket to Work Program helps people take control of their situations and employment options.
