National Down Syndrome Registry Created

According to DisabilityScoop, a national registry has been created for people with Down syndrome in order to help researchers studying the disorder. The database, known as DS-Connect, is designed to help researchers collect information on a voluntary and confidential basis from people with Down syndrome or family members who sign up for them.

DisabilityScoop reported that participants can compare their experiences with those of other people on the registry and be contacted by researchers for studies. “DS-Connect fills that need, and helps link individuals with Down syndrome to the doctors and scientists working to improve their health and quality of life,” Yvonne Maddox, deputy director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health told the website.

Researchers say the database will be helpful in collecting information from older individuals with Down syndrome, since people with the disorder are living longer and it may be useful to understand why.

People who suffer from certain forms of mental retardation, or whom have physical limitations caused by shorter limbs or poor muscle tone, may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. In particular, if a person has non-mosaic Down syndrome, he or she will automatically meet the Social Security Administration’s criteria for disability at birth.

Some people with Down syndrome are able to work, depending on the severity of their condition. If a person has worked in the past and has earned work credits, he or she may be eligible for SSDI, should his or her condition deteriorate. If you suffer from a disability that leaves you unable to work, we suggest contacting a Tulsa Social Security disability attorney to see if you may be eligible for SSDI benefits.
