Has Disability Hiring Declined?

Unfortunately, according to Disability Scoop, the unemployment rate for Americans with disabilities has increased slightly. Photo of piggy bank

The news source reported that data compiled by the U.S. Department of Labor shows the jobless rate for those with disabilities increased to 10.4 percent last month, up from 10.2 percent in August. Disability Scoop speculated that this may be occurring because “fewer people with disabilities were on the job and many chose to stop looking for work altogether.”

Those included in the data were people with disabilities over the age of 16 who do not live in institutions. The Department of Labor started tracking this statistic in 2009.

Interestingly, the drop in disability employment came as the country added 142,000 jobs over the period and the unemployment rate for the general population was unmoved at 5.1 percent.
