Breast Cancer and SSDI: What Do I Need to Know?

We would like to remind readers that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the campaign, you will see many people wearing pink in an attempt to raise awareness about the disease, which affects more than 230,000 American women in new cases each year.

For example, during NFL games, you will see pink cleats, towels and hats. There are also many fundraising events taking place nationally. For more information about fundraising opportunities and events locally, you can reach Susan G. Komen Tulsa by clicking here.

An estimated 40,000 women in the U.S. die each year because of breast cancer. Additionally, more than 2,300 men receive a diagnosis. Early screening is important in preventing the spread of the disease—if you experience issues with lumps in your breasts or discharge from your nipples, talk to your doctor about these conditions.

Many women in the U.S. can be diagnosed at an early stage of breast cancer, before symptoms appear, through mammography. This is important, as it can help prevent the spread of the disease and reduce a victim’s chance of dying or becoming severely ill.

Breast cancer is listed through the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Compassionate Allowance program. Because of this, if you apply for benefits, you may be able to receive an expedited decision regarding your claim. To apply, the SSA may request medical documentation for your diagnosis, including MRI imaging, mammograms and biopsies, so you should be prepared to hand over sensitive information, if it is required.
