When I Apply For Supplemental Security Income, What Questions Will They Ask Me?

Have you lost your job due to a disabling injury? Such a loss can be painful in so many ways. Hard working Oklahomans who have been able to support themselves all of their lives are suddenly forced to rely on others to get by. It can be embarrassing, and that’s part of why the Social Security Administration (SSA) offers benefits to these individuals. However, qualifying for benefits can be rough. The process can be long and highly detailed, so here are some questions you need to know the answers to before you apply.

What Will I Be Asked When I Apply for Supplemental Security Income?

Construction Workers

  • Dates– Expect to be asked when the last time you worked was, when your condition became disabling and when you last visited the doctor.
  • Medical Information– Be ready to tell the SSA what medications you are taking, the medical tests you’ve had and the names, addresses and phone numbers of the doctors you’ve seen about your condition.
  • Living Arrangements– The administration will ask you if you are married and where you live. This line of questions will also include your household expenses, how much your spouse makes, and any other sources of income you may have.
  • Assets– Do you have a bank account, savings, property or vehicles? The SSA will want to know about these and any other assets you have like investments.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides benefits to individuals with disabilities who have limited resources and income. This makes the last two areas of questions very important when it comes to getting benefits approval for SSI. If you have a fair amount of assets, savings or investments and a condition prevents you from working, applying for Social Security Disability insurance would probably be a better option for you.
