Did you know there’s a wait list for developmental disabilities benefits in Oklahoma? Well, not only is there a wait list, but it is also undergoing a makeover that some fear the changes could be unfair to people with developmental disabilities and their families.
What Changes is Oklahoma Making to the Developmental Disabilities Benefits Wait List?
With developmental disability benefits in high demand, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (ODHS) is facing a backlog that has forced them to rethink their system for distributing benefits. According to Tulsa World, a Tulsa, Oklahoma-based news website, instead prioritizing the wait list on a first come, first-served basis, ODHS is considering prioritizing the list according to who it believes needs the benefits most. If this happens, then families that have already been waiting years for benefits could be moved to the back of the wait list in favor of people who ODHS believes need the benefits more than they do.
There are those who oppose the proposed change to the wait list, calling it unfair. If the ODHS decides to make the change, it will reportedly take years to implement.
Can I Afford to Hire a Disability Lawyer?
As Tulsa disability lawyer Steve Troutman explains in the video below, our attorneys work on a contingency fee basis, which means that you do not pay us any attorney fees up front. Therefore, hiring our law firm basically costs you nothing up front, and you don’t owe us anything unless we recover money for you.
