Can A GoFundMe Campaign Ruin Your Social Security Benefits?

For one baseball fan in Kansas City, Missouri life has been pretty rough. She has lived with a disabling disease all her life, so a group of friendly baseball fans decided to make one of her dreams come true. They sent her to a Royal’s game. However, their good intentions have now left this woman in a desperate situation.

How a GoFundMe Campaign Can Ruin Your Social Security Benefits

This Kansas City Royals fan has neurofibromatosis, a rare condition that causes tumors to grow all over her body. These tumors have been a source of both physical and emotional pain for all of her life. As she was growing up, children made fun of her because of the way the tumors made her look. As an adult, one of her tumors tested positive for cancer, and doctors were forced amputate her leg. But through all this pain, she could always find joy in baseball.

She shared her joy for baseball and some of her life story online, and a group of Royals fans decided to make a GoFundMe campaign for her. They raised $3,700 to send her to a Royals playoff game, and she accepted the gift. She got to enjoy the game, she even said it felt like heaven while she was there, but she never could have imagined the hell waiting for her after the game.

This woman is unable to work, so she depends on Social Security Disability benefits to get by every month. However, when the Social Security Administration heard about the act of charity, the agency wasn’t pleased. It sent a letter to this woman and told her the agency would take the amount of the GoFundMe campaign out of her benefits. Now this woman is struggling for a solution to this unexpected problem.

After an entire life of suffering one woman is having to pay a steep price. Do you think it’s fair? Log on to our Twitter and Facebook to chime in, and keep following your Tulsa disability attorneys on this blog.

I didn't think there was a caring professional considerate attorney firm on the planet, but Troutman & Troutman proved me wrong. From the receptionist to the legal assistance to the attorney and more they were exceptional people.

They did a fantastic job getting everything gathered up and getting the trial done as quickly as possible. Anytime I had a question they were patient and help me understand what was going on. Especially Christy and Charlie were great.

Steve Troutman was able to get my short-term and long-term disability for me. Then Erin another lawyer for their firm got my Social security disability for me. Great people.

Mr. Troutman walked me through the entire process. Heather was available each time I called, answered all my crazy questions, and helped me fill out forms along the way. I was never treated like I was wasting time.
