SSDI: NOSSCR Supports Budget Deal

Updating a blog post we brought you last week, the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) has released a statement in support of the bipartisan budget plan that was reached by Congress recently.

The NOSSCR said it is glad that Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) was not placed on the chopping block.

“Today, President Obama signed into law a budget deal that protects those who, due to debilitating impairments, like spinal cord injuries, kidney failure, or advanced or terminal cancer, depend on the [SSDI] program to help them support themselves and their families,” the NOSSCR said. “This is good news for the millions of individuals and families who rely on the disability benefits they have earned and for which they qualify.”

The organization said that it would have preferred a budget deal that reallocated funds between the Old Age and Survivors and Disability Insurance Trust Funds for longer; however, it is happy that an agreement was made to extend funding through payroll taxes for 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Additionally, the NOSSCR statement indicated the organization has some concerns about changes in the bill, which include money being allocated to investigate instances of potential SSDI fraud, which is extremely rare. Nevertheless, it supports the effort made to get the bill passed.

“While we have concerns about some of the policy changes included in the package, we look forward to addressing those concerns through the Social Security Administration’s rulemaking process to implement these changes,” the statement said.

Why Is NOSSCR Support Important?

The NOSSCR is a specialized bar association for attorneys and advocates who work directly representing people with disabilities. Our Tulsa disability lawyers are sustaining members of the organization.

Among its members, the NOSSCR has some of the leading experts on disability law in the country, so when it releases statements about legislative concerns, they should be taken very seriously. Keep following our blog this week for more news about SSDI.
