Asthma And Social Security Disability: What Should I Know?

Do you suffer from severe asthma or breathing problems? Unfortunately, asthma is one of the most persistent disabilities Americans face, as an estimated 22.5 million people suffer from the disease.

Because of this, May is Asthma Awareness Month, as recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With this in mind, victims of asthma, who may suffer from issues like wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing, may be able to collect Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits.

In order to qualify for benefits, an asthma victim may have to show that he or she suffers from chronic, severe attacks that leave him or her unable to work. In order to do this, you may have to show medical evidence of doctor visits and hospitalizations associated with attacks.

Additionally, in some circumstances, the Social Security Administration may require documentation of medication or prolonged inhaler use. Sometimes, the SSA also requests information about pulmonary function tests like spirometry tests or arterial blood gas studies to determine a victim’s disability level.

How Can SSDI Help Me if I Have Asthma?

For many Americans with asthma, SSDI helps when they can no longer work by providing them with income. If you are interested in collecting SSDI, you can visit our Social Security FAQ page to read more about requirements.

Sadly, asthma has no cure, although some victims can manage symptoms and work. Remember, to collect SSDI, you will need to show that your condition is expected to last longer than a year or could result in death—so people with respiratory problems must show that they are severe.

If you are interested in applying for SSDI and you have asthma, you can contact our Tulsa disability attorneys by filling out the case review form on our site.
