On Wednesday, May 20th, the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation presented a special SMART home to disabled veteran, Rusty Dunagan. After a yearlong tour in Iraq, Rusty was sent to Afghanistan where he survived a land mine and bomb attack seven weeks into the assignment. He spent two years recovering, survived serious infections and underwent 30 surgeries. He lost both of his legs and an arm, but he held onto his love for his country and his family.
Rusty insisted that his new home have a flagpole, and during the presentation ceremony, he and four other soldiers who served with him in the army raised an American flag and a U.S. Army flag on that pole. “It was very emotional… I am a died-hard patriot,” said Dunagan afterward. He continued on to say, “This is our last home, our last move.”
The 4,300 square-foot home is wired throughout with customized appliances and gadgets to ease the challenges of daily life that Dunagan and his family face. Retractable cooktops, cabinets, and shelves are all accessible through special apps that can run on iPads and iPhones. His wife is happy for the technological assistance, and is glad that she won’t have to worry about her husband’s safety while she is out of the house.
This smart house is just one example of how life is being improved for the disabled. All people with disabilities should get the assistance they need, especially the veterans who risked their lives for this country’s freedom, and the attorneys of Troutman & Troutman are here to help.
