Tragically, Three Suicides Linked To SSDI Suspensions

Sadly, officials in Kentucky are investigating the deaths of three people who may have committed suicide after their Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits were suspended.

According to reports, Eastern Kentucky authorities believe that the three deaths were related to the suspension letters people received about their benefits. The sad tale traces back to an attorney named Eric C. Conn, who was featured in high-profile media reports last year, who has been accused of fraud, as he allegedly submitted false information from doctors to the Social Security Administration (SSA) in order to get thousands of people benefits.

Because of an ongoing investigation being conducted by the SSA into Conn’s practices, many of his former clients in Kentucky and West Virginia have received a letter from the agency indicating that their payments have been suspended.

According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, the SSA is “going through a process to re-determine eligibility for disability benefits on about 1,500 former clients of Conn.” It has reportedly suspended SSDI payments to about 900 people.

It should be noted that there is no evidence that Conn’s clients took part in the alleged fraud. Attorneys representing some of his former clients have filed an injunction to block the SSA from suspending their benefits. The injunction would allow people to receive benefits while the agency reviews their eligibility.
