Is Housing Becoming Unaffordable For The Disabled?

Recently, DisabilityScoop reported that housing for people living on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is becoming too costly for disabled Americans.

The news outlet reported that the Technical Assistance Collaborative and the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities produced a study indicating that nationally, “the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in 2014 totaled 104 percent of the monthly SSI payment for a person with a disability.”

The organizations described the situation as a crisis. The groups compared data from 2014 SSI payments with market rents for studio and one-bedroom apartments in communities across the country. They found that the average SSI payment was $750 while the national average for a one-bedroom apartment was $780.

Keep in mind, most financial experts say that housing should not account for more than 30 percent of a person’s income. To view the report, you can click here.
