Can I Collect SSDI If I Have Alzheimer’s Disease?

Do you know someone who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease? You should be aware that June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month (ABAM).Photo of senior

Unfortunately, it is estimated that 5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, with approximately 200,000 victims being under the age of 65 (younger-onset Alzheimer’s). Sadly, two-thirds of these people are women. The disease is the sixth leading cause of death among Americans.

It is estimated that these numbers will continue to grow in size as the U.S. population increases; keep in mind, Alzheimer’s disease is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America that cannot be slowed, prevented or cured. By 2025, it is estimated that about 7.1 million Americans will have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

Costs to treat Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are skyrocketing. In 2015, Alzheimer’s cost Americans an estimated $226 billion, with half of the expenses paid by Medicare.

Because of these numbers and the burden placed on the victims and the public, you will see many people wearing purple this month to support awareness. The Alzheimer’s Association is asking people to volunteer their time to local events. To view information about how you can help, you can click here.

What Do I Need to Know about SSDI and Alzheimer’s Disease?

It is unfortunate that people so many Americans are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. You should know that many victims who have younger-onset Alzheimer’s are eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

In 2010, the Social Security Administration added early-onset Alzheimer’s to its Compassionate Allowances program (CAL). This allows victims to receive expedited services when it comes to benefit decisions. Before you start this process, you should be aware that the SSA requires applicants to have worked a certain number of years in order to qualify for SSDI. If you do not have a work record, you may qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
