Do you or someone you love suffer from soft tissue sarcoma? Although many soft tissue tumors are not cancerous, sarcoma is rare and specific in that it is malignant. These tumors often start in a person’s bones and spread quickly through connective tissue including fat, blood vessels, nerves, bones, muscles, deep skin tissues and cartilage.
There are about 50 different types of soft tissue sarcomas that exist, according to the American Cancer Society. Some of the more common forms of sarcoma include:
- Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST)
- Kaposi sarcoma
- Liposarcoma
- Leiomyosarcoma
- Malignant mesenchymoma
- Adult fibrosarcoma
- Alveolar soft-part sarcoma
- Angiosarcoma (including hemangiosarcoma and lymphangiosarcoma)
- Rhabdomyosarcoma
Depending on their severity, sarcomas are assigned a grade of high, intermediate or low. An estimated 15,000 new cases of soft tissue sarcoma are diagnosed in the United States each year and approximately 3,900 people die from the disease each year.
Sadly, sarcoma victims must often undergo treatment via amputation and limb surgery, as well as radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy.
