If you have been following our blog, you should be aware that unless Congress does something soon to help with Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) funding, the program might run out of money by 2016.
Unfortunately, recently, GOP House members approved a parliamentary rule presenting obstacles to reallocate money between SSDI and the Old Age and Survivors Insurance program. The provision has generated a lot of outrage among disability advocates.
In fact, the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities recently put out a press release expressing its disgust with the measure. The release, which also served as a letter to John Boehner and Nancy Pelosi, detailed how SSDI recipients may end up facing a 20 percent cut in benefits next year, unless something is done to alleviate funding issues.
“The need for action now is no surprise, but stems from the long-term demographic trends including an aging workforce now in its disability-prone years, and an increase in work by women that has led to an increase in women’s eligibility for Social Security including SSDI,” the letter reads.
“Congress needs to act expeditiously, as it has done many times in the past, to reallocate existing payroll taxes,” the CCD said.
We have included a link to the PDF version of the letter below. We will discuss the funding issue further during the week.
How Do I Qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits?
Hopefully, more people will begin to speak out about SSDI funding issues. Our politicians need to do something to ensure that the country’s most vulnerable citizens do not receive benefit cuts.
For more information about the SSDI process, you can visit our Social Security FAQ page. To qualify for SSDI benefits, you must suffer from a disability that is expected to last longer than 12 months and could result in death. Contact us today if you have further questions.
