CBPP Chart Book Explains The Importance Of SSDI

Recently, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) released an excellent report with illustrations and figures detailing the importance of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program, while dispelling myths.Photo of people reviewing paperwork

To view the report, you can click here. As the CBPP notes, it is not easy to get SSDI, as the majority of applicants are turned down for benefits. “Some are rejected for technical reasons, mainly because they have not worked long enough,” the CBPP noted.

Additionally, the report discusses how difficult it can be to qualify for benefits, as many applicants undergo examinations before they receive payments, having to provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) with documented medical evidence of their disabilities.

“If people on disability were faking it, they wouldn’t have such high death rates,” the CBPP noted, saying that people who receive SSDI benefits are three to six times more likely to die than people in their age groups who do not receive benefits.

The CBPP also tackled the myth that disability claims are skyrocketing. “[T]he share of workers on disability has gone from slightly below 4 percent in 2000 to slightly above 4 percent in 2014,” the group noted.

Make Sure You Receive Guidance When You Apply For SSDI or Appeal a Benefit Decision

Over the past few weeks, we have highlighted stories to try to make sure that our readers understand that SSDI is not an entitlement program. We are doing this because we expect a lot of political wrangling to hit the media over the upcoming months, as the election season approaches and funding issues weigh on.

It is an extremely difficult process to obtain SSDI benefits. Our Tulsa disability lawyers can make sure your application or appeal contains all of the necessary information for your SSDI claim to be successful. It is important to work with an attorney to ensure that you are completing the process correctly.
