Our Tulsa disability attorneys are pleased to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Social Security, which will occur this Friday, August 14.
Throughout the week, we will discuss the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the benefits of its programs like Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Now, more than ever, Americans need to be aware of the importance of these programs, as they are a part of the country’s social fabric. Millions of Americans rely on these programs for income in the event of their own retirement, disability or the death of family wage earners.
After advocating for Americans with disabilities for more than 20 years, our Tulsa attorneys have seen firsthand the vital role Social Security plays in people’s lives. As the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (of which we are members) reports, “in addition to providing a foundation of economic security to millions of Americans, Social Security also boosts the economy, because when people receive this compensation, they spend it in their communities. In 2012, Social Security supported more than $1 trillion in economic output.”
When you hear attacks on Social Security (which are expected due to the upcoming national elections), keep in mind that most people who receive benefits live frugally. According to the NOSSCR, SSDI benefits make up at least 90 percent of income for half of all disabled beneficiaries, with those who receive benefits only getting around $1,130 per month or $35 per day.

In order to obtain SSDI, you must have paid into the program and have earned work credits. For more information about the process, you can visit our FAQ page.
