Psoriasis And SSDI: What Do I Need To Know?

Do you have psoriasis? Unfortunately, more than 7.5 million Americans are currently living with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, which can have a great impact on their lives and ability to function.

With this in mind, August is Psoriasis Awareness Month, as commissioned by the National Psoriasis Foundation. According to the group, 33 percent of Americans with psoriasis report that their disease affects their social interactions with the public.

Additionally, 53 percent are dissatisfied with their current treatment and 72 percent are overweight and at risk of other chronic conditions. Keep in mind, many psoriasis victims develop severe inflammation and lesions.

The disease can appear anywhere on the body, but most frequently occurs on the scalp, knees, elbows and torsos of victims, according to the NPF. It is believed that both genetics and external factors play a role in the development of the psoriasis, although an exact cause is unknown.

Psoriasis overwhelming affects Caucasians, although victims are also found in other races. Victims report that they often have problems sleeping, walking, sitting or standing for long periods of time, as well as difficulty using their hands, due to outbreaks.

If You Suffer From Severe Psoriasis, You May Be Able to Collect SSDI

Although the Social Security Administration (SSA) does not have a specific listing for psoriasis when it comes to collecting Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), victims with severe ailments may be able to obtain benefits through its dermatitis listing.

If you have a skin disease or condition that makes it difficult to move, making it impossible to work, you may be able to seek benefits. Speak to our Tulsa disability attorneys if you are in this position. When you apply for benefits, the SSA will expect that you are unable to do sedentary jobs, so your disabilities must be severe.

If you have questions about collecting SSDI with a skin disease or disorder, contact our Tulsa disability attorneys. For more information about the SSDI application and appeals process, you can contact our office at (918) 265-1404.
