Cancer Victims Unable To Work Can Collect SSDI

If you have a form of cancer that has left you unable to work, you should know that you might be able to collect Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits.

If you are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation or other forms of cancer treatments, and your symptoms are expected to last for more than 12 months and have left you disabled, talk to our Tulsa SSDI attorneys. In order to obtain benefits, you must have a detailed work history and credits, and you must have paid FICA (income) taxes.

If you are approved for SSDI benefits, you will be paid starting in your sixth full month from the time that your disability began, which the Social Security Administration (SSA) determines. Payments are based on your lifetime average taxed earnings and replace about 58 percent of your income below $100,000 per year.

To view which forms of cancer the SSA evaluates when determining SSDI eligibility, you can visit the agency’s medical guide, where they are listed in Section 13 — Malignant Neoplastic Diseases. Keep in mind, you may have a very specific form of cancer not listed here and you may still be able to obtain benefits—each form of cancer diagnosis qualifies individuals differently.

In some cases, applicants must show that their cancer is in an advanced stage or that it has metastasized, is inoperable or is reoccurring despite treatment.
