Question

Back Injuries And SSDI: What Do I Need To Know?

Last year, we discussed how 1 in 10 Americans suffers from lower back pain, and how back injuries are the number one cause of job disabilities worldwide.

Unfortunately, many back injuries are serious enough that they leave victims unable to work. Some common forms of injuries include degenerative disc disease (DDD), nerve root compression, spinal stenosis, arachnoiditis, as well as paralysis that results in paraplegia and quadriplegia.

If you suffer from back problems or have a spinal cord injury that leaves you unable to work, you should be aware that you might be able to obtain Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

To do this, we would suggest working with our Tulsa disability attorneys. When you apply for benefits, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will review your application, which could include medical evidence like x-rays or MRIs, highlighting your condition.

The agency may also review documents provided by your doctors about the limitations provided by your back injury. Remember, in order to obtain benefits, your disability must be expected to last for at least 12 months or result in death. You simply cannot receive SSDI because you have a sore back or minor ailment.

The SSA will also review your employment history to determine your residual functional capacity (RFC). This assessment will determine how long you can sit or stand, how much weight you can lift, and how long you can walk for, if possible.

Back Injuries Can Be Devastating: Seek Assistance If You are Applying for SSDI

As we noted above, if you have a back injury that is minor, you will not be eligible for SSDI benefits. The SSA does an excellent job making sure that people with back or spinal cord injuries cannot perform the physical demands required of various forms of labor.

If you have a back injury and you have questions about SSDI benefits, do not hesitate to contact our Tulsa Social Security disability lawyers for a free evaluation of your case. You can reach us by calling (918) 265-1404.
