Can I Collect Disability If I Have Parkinson’s Disease?

Each April, we like to remind people that it is Parkinson’s Awareness Month.

Sadly, the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF), which commemorates the month, estimates that approximately 60,000 people in America are diagnosed with the disease each year, while countless cases go undetected.

Parkinson’s disease is horrific. The disease is a degenerative disorder that affects a person’s central nervous system, leading to issues with shaking and difficulty walking. It can have a significant impact on a victim’s ability to move, as he or she may suffer from tremors, stiffness in limbs and balance and coordination problems.

If you are experiencing issues with your balance or have tremors, it may be in your best interest to speak to a physician about your symptoms. You may need to have a neurological exam to determine if you suffer from any disease or illness.

Collecting Social Security Disability with Parkinson’s Disease

It should be noted that if you suffer from Parkinson’s disease, you might be able to collect Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). To qualify for benefits, you will need to prove that your symptoms make it impossible for you to work.

If you decide to apply for benefits, you should be prepared to show the Social Security Administration that your disease requires regular doctor visits, as well as medical documentation of your ailments. If you have questions about benefits, you can visit our Social Security FAQ page.

Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe! It should be noted that on April 19, the Parkinson’s Foundation of Oklahoma will have a sanctioned 5K Run and 1 Mile Run/Walk starting at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center Lot. For information about this event, you can click here.
