When Will The SSA Begin Sending Out Paper Statements?

If you enjoyed receiving paperwork benefit statements in the mail from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and were disappointed when the agency discontinued sending them in 2011, it is time to celebrate.

The SSA announced recently that it would resume mailing paper statements every five years to workers who are ages 25 to 60 if they haven’t signed up for online statements.

In 2011, the agency announced that it was going to stop mailing the statements to workers to save an annual $70 million in printing and mailing costs. At the time, the SSA began promoting its online tool “my Social Security”, which allows people to view benefit information about Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Social Security Income (SSI) online.

More than 13 million people signed up for the online tool, but that number represents only about 6 percent of the country’s workforce. The change to paper statements is expected to go into effect this month.

How Can I Obtain Information About My Social Security Benefits?

For more information about applying for SSDI benefits, you can visit our Social Security FAQ page.

We always recommend using the online tool when it comes to checking benefit amounts, as it allows access 24 hours per day. Additionally, it is sometimes easier than waiting in line at a local Social Security office, and it is sometimes easier to spot inaccurate information.

Remember, if you ever spot inaccuracies in your benefit statements, you can call the SSA or visit your local branch to dispute the items. You may need to have information like wage statements and W-2 forms to provide evidence for your case.

If you are disabled and thinking about applying for SSDI or are in the appeals process, call us today so that we can review your case. Remember, having experienced legal representation is important—failure to get sound advice may result in delays in your case.
