Can I Collect Social Security If I Have Breast Cancer?

Each October, you may notice the abundance of pink in clothing, supermarket products and even at football games. This is because it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and millions of people across the country are beginning to show their support to help raise awareness for the disease.

Breast cancer affects many people, in addition to women, as it can have a significant impact on family members of victims.

According to breastcancer.org, about one in eight American women develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their life. Additionally, more than 230,000 women are diagnosed with invasive breast cancer each year, while more than 2,300 men receive a diagnosis.

Furthermore:

  • About 40,000 women in the U.S. are expected to die in 2014 from breast cancer.
  • In the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.
  • Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women.

For information about breast cancer, and how you can raise awareness about the disease, you can visit the Susan G. Komen organization website, which we have provided a link to below.

Will I Qualify for SSDI If I Have Breast Cancer?

If you have breast cancer and are unable to work, you may be able to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Breast cancer is a disease that qualifies as a Compassionate Allowance condition, meaning your disability application could be expedited if you document it properly and are fully disabled.

It should be noted that the size of your tumor or tumors as well as the stage of your condition could play a role in qualifying you for benefits and how quickly you may be able to do so. The Social Security Administration may also request medical documentation for your diagnosis—this could include information about MRI imaging, mammograms and biopsies.

If you suffer from breast cancer and can no longer work, we can help you in your quest to obtain Social Security benefits. Call us today.
