As a reminder to our veterans, the federal government has launched a new process to expedite Social Security disability claims for former military members.
We have discussed the new system in the past, but it has recently become a reality, according to Stars and Stripes. Under the new system, veterans who apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) with a VA disability rating of 100 percent will have their applications for Social Security disability benefits processed faster.
According to Stars and Stripes, the Social Security Administration (SSA) process will be similar to how the VA handles disability claims from Wounded Warriors.
“We have reached another milestone for those who have sacrificed so much for our country, and this process ensures they will get the benefits they need quickly,” acting Social Security Commissioner Carolyn Colvin said in a news release. “While we can never fully repay them for their sacrifices, we can be sure we provide them with the quality of service that they deserve. This initiative is truly a lifeline for those who need it most.”
I Am a Veteran. Do I Qualify for Disability Benefits?
It should be noted that in order to qualify for the expedited process, veterans must inform Social Security that they have a 100 percent Permanent and Total disability compensation rating and provide a copy of their VA Notification Letter as proof of their disability rating, according to Stars and Stripes.
Just because a veteran has a 100 percent rating from the VA does not mean he or she will automatically qualify for SSA benefits. The VA uses a structured percentage system to determine if someone is disabled, meaning a veteran can be 50, 60 or even 100 percent disabled. However, in order to qualify for SSDI, you must have a “total disability”, leaving you unable to work.
A veteran must also meet other eligibility standards through the SSA, which require earned work credits. If you have questions about qualifying for SSDI, we suggest you visit our Social Security FAQ page.
