How Often Does The Social Security Administration Review Medical Records?

Clients frequently ask us how often the Social Security Administration (SSA) will review their cases when it comes to disability benefits. The answer is that it really depends on your condition.

If you have a medical condition that is expected to improve, the SSA may review your case to determine if you should continue to receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

Recently, a district manager at a Social Security office answered a FAQ article regarding this question in the Asbury Park Press. In her piece, Joanne Crane explains that a recipient’s award notice tells him or her when he or she can expect to have a review.

According to Crane, the following terminology is used:

  • Medical improvement expected: If your condition is expected to improve within a specific time, your first review will be six to 18 months after you started getting disability benefits.
  • Medical improvement possible: If improvement in your medical condition is possible, your case will be reviewed about every three years.
  • Medical improvement not expected: If your medical condition is unlikely to improve, your case will be reviewed about once every five to seven years.

How Do I Know If I Am Eligible for SSDI?

Keep in mind, the SSA determines if a person is eligible for benefits through an initial application. Following this process, the agency may attempt to obtain a person’s medical records, and may schedule an applicant to receive a consultative examination with a doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist.

If you fear that you have been wrongfully denied an SSDI claim or that your review was not conducted properly, you should work with an attorney.
