Can You Collect Social Security Following An Amputation?

Have you lost a limb in an accident and been left unable to work? Although you would think that an amputation would qualify you for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), that is not always the case.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) gauges every claim differently when it comes to amputations, so speaking to an experienced disability lawyer is important when navigating a case.

There are criteria a person must meet to qualify for benefits. However, in the examples below, you have a better chance at approval:

  • If you lose both hands to amputation
  • If you lose one or both legs above the ankle and cannot walk effectively
  • If you lose a leg above a hip and are bound to a wheelchair
  • If you sustain a pelvic amputation or hemipelvectomy

Additionally, if you suffer some other form of amputation, you may qualify for benefits if the SSA assesses your “residual functional capacity” and determines that your ability to perform work in certain settings is ineffective.
