Are You Unable To Work? Social Security Disability May Be An Option

Have you suffered an accident that has left you disabled and unable to work?

This week, in a combined effort with the Center for American Progress, the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) released a long-form piece detailing how Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a bedrock for American workers.

The report, which can be found here, is incredibly detailed. We suggest reading it whenever you get a chance.

Among the nuggets of information in the piece—SSDI protects more than 9 out of 10 American workers and their families in the event of a life-changing disability or illness that prevents substantial work.

“Today, nearly all Americans—91 percent of workers ages 21 to 64—are protected by Social Security Disability Insurance,” the NOSSCR reported. “In all, more than 160 million American workers and their families are protected. About 8.9 million disabled workers—including more than 1 million veterans—receive Disability Insurance benefits, as well as about 157,000 spouses and 1.9 million dependent children of disabled workers.”

According to the NOSSCR, for a young worker with a spouse and two children, the value of SSDI is equivalent to a $580,000 insurance policy.

Am I Eligible for SSDI?

SSDI benefits are determined by how much you have paid into the system and for how long. As the NOSSCR reported, American workers currently pay 6.2 percent of the first $117,000 of their earnings each year into SSDI, and employers pay the same amount up to the same cap. Of the 6.2 percent, 5.3 percent currently goes to the Old Age and Survivors Insurance trust fund and 0.9 percent to the DI trust fund.
