National Unemployment Rate For The Disabled Lingers To The End Of 2013

While federal disability hiring reached its highest levels in decades, the national disability employment rate lingered towards the end of 2013.

According to DisabilityScoop, unemployment among people with disabilities dipped to 12.3 percent in November 2013, which is down from 12.8 percent the prior month. While it is encouraging that the number declined slightly, many economic experts believe that it may be because fewer people with disabilities are seeking work.

It should also be noted that the unemployment rate for the disabled is still much higher than the national average for people without disabilities, which hovered around 7 percent in November 2013.

Do I Qualify For Disability Benefits?

To qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, the Social Security Administration (SSA) requires applicants to show that they cannot do the work that they used to do. However, it is insufficient to merely convince the SSA that a person simply cannot do his or her past work. A person must prove that the impairments would keep him or her from doing any other type of work that exists in significant numbers because of the medical condition. Applicants also have to show that their disabilities have lasted for longer than a year or could result in death.
