SSDI Beneficiaries Experience Higher Death Rates

As Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) attorneys, we often hear from people wanting to know about the severity of disabilities associated with those who receive benefits.

Well, last year, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) released an alarming report about people who receive benefits, indicating that they are more than three times to die sooner than other people their age.

This should come as no surprise; many of the people collecting SSDI benefits are fighting grave illnesses including cancer, emphysema, congestive heart failure or kidney failure. According to estimates, about one-fifth of men who get SSDI and nearly one-sixth of women, die within five years after they start collecting benefits.

These numbers destroy notions that people who receive SSDI are fraudulently displaying illnesses to receive benefits.

I Have a Terminal Illness. Do I Qualify for SSDI Benefits?

As we reported last week, several forms of cancer and other terminal illnesses are considered under the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Compassionate Allowances (CAL) program, which can help expedite the qualification process.

In addition, if you think may qualify for benefits, the Social Security Administration (SSA) uses two different tests to evaluate a person’s work history. The first of these tests is the “Duration of Work Test,” while the second is the “Recent Work Test.”
