The National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) has released a statement regarding the Social Security trustees’ annual report last month, which indicated that Congress needs to act quickly to secure future benefit funding.
“The fact that the numbers are right in line with actuarial predictions is good news for the Social Security disability program, and in turn, for the American workers who rely on its modest but crucial coverage to help in a time of great physical and financial strain,” said Barbara Silverstone, Executive Director of the NOSSCR. “The program is achieving its aims and providing peace of mind for those no longer able to support themselves through work.”
The trustee report indicated that the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) trust fund would have just $90.4 billion in reserves at the end of 2014, meaning by the end of 2016, the reserves could be depleted.
“A rebalancing of the trust funds through reallocation of the payroll tax going into each of the funds, which has been approved by Congress multiple times in the past, would account for demographic shifts and solve short-term funding gaps,” the NOSSCR release stated.
It should be noted that Steve Troutman is a sustaining member of the NOSSCR, and has attended every organizational conference since he began practicing law. Additionally, the other attorneys at our firm are members of the organization, often going to circuit conferences.
How Does the SSA Determine If a Person Is Disabled?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a five-step evaluation to determine if a person is disabled. Sadly, nearly 80 percent of SSDI applicants are denied at the initial level, and fewer than four in 10 are approved after all levels of appeal, which is why it is important to seek legal representation.
