This month marks the 79th birthday of the Social Security Administration, with the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) releasing a statement supporting the agency.
“The program has served our workers well for 79 years, and with a few minor adjustments from Congress, the program will remain strong for future generations,” the NOSSCR said. “Since 1956, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) has protected Americans with disabilities from extreme poverty and homelessness by providing a minimal level of support for those no longer able to work.”
Indeed, the SSDI program is vital to the nation’s economy. It has been reported that for every dollar of Social Security benefits paid out, $2 of economic output is generated for the country. Keep this in mind, when people discuss negative issues surrounding benefits.
Remember, to obtain SSDI benefits, a person may be required to schedule a consultative examination with a doctor. Only in cases of severe disabilities are benefits awarded after an initial application, and only people who have paid into the system can receive benefits, so they are not “entitlements”.
“Social Security has served as one of our nation’s hallmark social insurance programs for almost eight decades and instead of criticizing the program and its key components, including [SSDI] and Supplemental Security Income, with myths and untruths, let’s come together to protect the program and urge Congress to strengthen it for current and future generations,” said Barbara Silverstone, Executive Director of the NOSSCR.
How Can I Apply for SSDI?
If you are thinking about applying for SSDI, it may be in your best interest to work with someone who can help you work through an application or an appeal. Remember, the overwhelming majority of initial applications for disabilities are denied. To qualify you must have medical documentation and meet strict eligibility requirements.
