Social Security Disability Benefits Are Important For Those Who Earn Them

Last month, the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) endorsed a letter to the editor that ran in the Buffalo News, written by a New York Social Security attorney denouncing misinformation about Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

The letter, by Jeffrey Freedman, described how President Franklin Roosevelt signed Social Security into law in 1935, guaranteeing “security” for the men, women and children of the nation, who pay into the system through their taxes.

“Critics of SSD wanting to see benefits cut are spreading misinformation,” Freedman wrote. “Yet benefits are so modest many recipients are already barely scraping by. SSD (averaging around $1,130 per month) makes up at least 90 percent of income for half of all disabled beneficiaries.”

How Can Social Security Disability Help Me?

We have long urged citizens to research Social Security news and history rather than rely on biased news outlets for information. While some news outlets and/or political pundits would like to paint the picture that disability recipients are lazy or entitled, nothing could be further from the truth.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) requires SSDI applicants to show that they cannot do work because of their medical conditions. They also must have earned work credits. For more information, we suggest you visit our FAQ page.
