On Monday, we discussed the importance of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits to the country’s financial security. Earlier this month, the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI) released a short video highlighting the importance of the Social Security program, in honor of its 78th Anniversary.
The video, titled ‘Social Security: Americans Agree’ focuses on a survey done through the NASI, which found that 75 percent of respondents said the country should consider increasing benefits to people who rely on the program. The video also noted that 7 in 10 Americans see SSI as the “foundation of their retirement”. The survey also found that 82 percent of Americans are willing to pay more in taxes for SSA benefit programs.
Among the survey’s other findings:
- In various age groups, the majority of people surveyed said they would be willing to pay more for benefits (78 percent of people under 35-years-old, 81 percent of people ages 35-49, 83 percent of people ages 50-64 and 90 percent of people ages 65 and older)
- Both Democrats and Republicans surveyed said they would be willing to pay more for benefits (74 percent Republican, 88 percent Democrat)
- Most Americans agreed that the country should gradually raise Social Security taxes in two ways—“a little from all workers, and a little more from top earners.”
