AARP Releases SSA Stats, Shows Benefits Are Critical For Economy

AARP, Inc., formerly the American Association of Retired Persons, released a report last month indicating that Social Security, particularly Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), are critical in promoting income stability among households in the United States.

According to AARP, more than 57 million Americans receive a form of Social Security benefits, which play a key role in supporting the economy. The Social Security Administration (SSA) supports over 9 million jobs across the country and more than a trillion dollars of economic output, according to the organization.

According to the AARP, in 2012, Social Security benefits provided:

  • About $1.4 trillion in economic output (goods and services)
  • 9.2 million jobs
  • More than $774 billion in gross domestic product
  • More than $370 billion in salaries, wages and other compensation
  • Tax revenues for local, state and federal governments exceeding $222 billion

The organization reported that for every dollar of Social Security benefits paid out, $2 of economic output was generated for the country. With the ongoing smear campaign led by some politicians and media outlets against the SSA, we think it is important for organizations to accurately report statistics.

SSA benefits are critical to the country’s financial security and growth. Keep in mind that in order to obtain SSDI benefits, a person may be required to schedule a consultative examination with a doctor. Only in cases of severe disabilities are benefits awarded after an initial application; no matter what you read or hear, these benefits are not “entitlements”.
