Oklahoma Congressman Continues SSDI Funding Review

NewsOK.com reported last week that Rep. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma City, was pursuing a solution to solve the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) alleged march towards insolvency. According to Langford, the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) will be broke in three years, as more people collect benefits.

“There are truly disabled people … that can be hurt on this if we don’t find a way to be able to resolve this issue soon,” Lankford said, according to the website. Last week, Congress held a subcommittee hearing asking SSA officials to testify about how they are combating fraud and ensuring judges are properly scrutinizing applicants.

Some elected officials, including Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., said SSDI is a lifeline for the truly disabled and urged members to give the SSA more money to review cases. According NewsOK.com, an SSA official said that an additional $1.2 billion to conduct disability reviews could ultimately save taxpayers $40 billion over the next decade.

During the congressional meeting, SSA inspector general Patrick O’Carroll said the agency expects to pay $190 billion this year to 18 million disabled workers and their families, and receive about 3 million new disability claims. “Determining who’s eligible and who continues to be eligible is an overwhelming task,” O’Carroll said, according to NewsOK.com.

We will keep you posted when it comes to SSA news. Unfortunately, over the upcoming months, in the media you will continue to hear stories focusing on negative aspects of SSDI, including issues relating to fraud and funding. Ultimately, it will come down to our elected officials deciding whether they want to continue to assist people who are truly disabled. Keep in mind, people who collect SSDI benefits have paid into the system through taxes and have earned work credits.

If you suffer from a disability that leaves you unable to work, we suggest contacting a Tulsa Social Security disability attorney. We offer free evaluations of your case, and you may reach us by phone at (918) 265-1404.
