November Is American Diabetes Month

November is American Diabetes Month, aimed at raising awareness and education for a disease that affects millions of people. The American Diabetes Association, a group that focuses on issues surrounding diabetes and the people who are impacted by the disease, organizes the month.

According to the American Diabetes Association:

  • Nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.
  • Another 79 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
  • The total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $245 billion.

There are a few different forms of diabetes, which affects how a person’s body uses blood glucose, which is vital to a person’s energy, muscles and tissues.

Earlier this year, we blogged about a study that found that people with diabetes may have a 50 percent higher risk of obtaining other disabilities than people who do not suffer from the disease. This is alarming when you consider that an estimated 350 million adults suffer from diabetes worldwide.

Some of the common disabilities associated with diabetes include retinopathy, nephropathy, peripheral neuropathies, cardiovascular problems, skin and bacterial infections, and amputations.

A person with diabetes may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) if the disease affects his or her ability to work. If you are disabled due to diabetes, contact our Tulsa Social Security disability lawyers to help you get the benefits you need.
