Disability Protestors Arrested Following White House Demonstration

According to the disabilityscoop.com, more than three-dozen disability rights activists were arrested on April 22 while protesting near the White House gates. Those arrested were among 200 demonstrators with ADAPT, a disability rights group.

ADAPT has argued that President Barack Obama has not done enough to give people with disabilities access to services in their communities. “The president has not taken the initiative to proactively champion community living or the innovative Medicaid programs that could make it a reality,” said ADAPT organizer Josue Rodriguez of Tennessee in a statement following the demonstration. “In nearly every way, President Obama and his administration have failed to live up to the promises about community living that he made during his presidential campaigns.”

According to the U.S. Secret Service, 38 people were arrest for misdemeanor charges of crossing a police line following the demonstration.

Qualifying For Benefits

While we would support an increase in funding for services that help the disabled, we would also like to remind people with disabilities that they may qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. In order to assist people in understanding the differences between the two programs, we developed an SSDI versus SSI page.
