OPM No Longer Requires Applicants To Have Medical Certification For Employment

A ruling by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) states that people with intellectual, psychiatric and physical disabilities are no longer required to provide certification that they are ready to work when applying for jobs with the federal government.

The decision makes it easier for people with disabilities to join the federal workforce. Prior to the ruling, applicants were required to provide a letter from a medical professional or disability agency assessing their ability to work.

This decision is good for disabled people who want to work for the federal government; however, there are still a significant number of American’s who cannot work because of their physical and mental conditions.

To qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, the Social Security Administration (SSA) requires applicants to show that they cannot do work that they use to do because of their medical conditions. Applicants also have to show that their disabilities have lasted for longer than a year or could result in death.
