The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced this month that Carolyn W. Colvin has become its acting commissioner.
Colvin takes over for Michael J. Astrue, who was nominated as the SSA commissioner by former President George W. Bush in 2007.
Colvin will serve as acting commissioner until President Barack Obama nominates a replacement, who will serve a six-year term.
Prior to becoming acting commissioner, Colvin served as the SSA’s deputy commissioner. In addition to her role as the acting commissioner, Colvin will serve as a trustee to the Social Security Board of Trustees.
Whomever Obama decided to nominate as his next commissioner is going to have tremendous power, as the number of people collecting Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits nationwide hit 8.8 million in December 2012.
