SAP Looking To Hire Workers With Autism; People With Spectrum Disorders May Qualify For Disability Benefits

According to the DisabilityScoop, software company SAP is looking to recruit Americans with autism for its workforce. The website reports that the Germany-based software giant is “launching a strategic effort to hire people with autism in order to tap their unique talents.”

“SAP sees a potential competitive advantage to leveraging the unique talents of people with autism, while also helping them to secure meaningful employment,” the company said in a statement.

The company said that it would recruit people with development disorders for jobs as testers, programmers and quality assurance specialists. According to DisabilityScoop, “SAP conducted a pilot program in India with six workers on the spectrum employed as software testers, which the company said resulted in improved productivity.”

Autism is a neurodevelopment disorder that affects social interaction skills, as well as communication. Depending on the level of severity for the person with autism, he or she may be entitled to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

Children with autism are likely to qualify for SSI benefits, if their family income and their disability level meet Social Security Administration (SSA) standards. An adult with autism may apply for SSDI, however their eligibility is determined based on their work history and work credits. In addition, an autistic adult of a parent collecting SSI benefits may qualify for SSDI benefits based on the earning record and work credits accumulated by their parent.
