Social Security Administration (SSA) Commissioner Michael J. Astrue will step down this month after completing his scheduled six-year term.
Astrue’s exit gives President Barack Obama the opportunity to name a new head to the federal government’s largest program.
Former President George W. Bush nominated Astrue in 2007. Obama’s nominee will have a term that would last beyond his presidency, as Social Security commissioners are appointed to serve six-year terms.
“I consider it a great privilege to have led this remarkable agency,” Astrue said in a statement.
The Associated Press reported that Asture worked to reduce backlogs of people applying for disability claims. We wish Asture luck in his future endeavors.
