Fed Urges Employment For Disabled Through “Ticket To Work”

The federal government is urging people who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits to look at its Ticket to Work program, if they have the desire and ability to work and can qualify.

The program supports career development for people with disabilities, ages 18 through 64, who want to work. It puts eligible people in contact with Employment Networks (ENs), which offer specialized services such as career counseling, vocational rehabilitation, and job placement and training.

If you decide that the program is for you, you will continue to receive your disability benefits  until you begin earning wages or self-employment income above the applicable earnings limit for SSI or SSDI. If you receive income below your benefit levels, then you benefit program will make up the deficiency.

Anyone interested in participating in the program should call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TDD/TTY).

It should be noted that this program is intended for people who are on SSDI or SSI, who would like to return to the work force, and have the ability to do so. It is not a requirement for people who are receiving benefits, as many disabled individuals may like to work but are simply unable.
