Number Of People Approved For SSDI Has Declined Over The Last Three Years

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has released statistics about the number of people who were approved for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in 2012, indicating the numbers have decreased over the last three years.

According to the SSA, the number of new SSDI recipients in 2012 was 960,206. This number is a decrease from 2011 when 998,979 people received benefits, and down significantly from 2010 when 1,026,988 people received benefits. These numbers include workers who received benefits and do not include spouses or children.

These numbers are somewhat amazing when you consider the number of news outlets that have promoted the idea that the number of people receiving SSDI is “out of control.” Of the 960,206 people who were approved for benefits, the majority were over the age of 45, with 248,128 being between the ages of 55 and 59.

According to the SSA, the average monthly benefit amount in 2012 was $1,203.

It should be noted that the SSA uses two different gauges by which to evaluate a person’s work history, when he or she applies for benefits. The first test is the “Duration of Work Test,” while the second test is the “Recent Work Test.” These tests take into account how long a person has worked, as well as how recently, in order to determine benefits.
