More Than 10 Million Received Disability Benefits In 2012

We often mention in our blog how people pay into the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefit system and earn work credits, busting the myth that it is an “entitlement” program.

Last week, benefitspro.com released an article indicating just how many people were paid through the system last year, using Social Security Administration (SSA) statistics. According to the SSA, more than 10.1 million people were paid disability benefits under the SSDI program in 2012, 2.5 percent of whom were disabled widows or widowers.

The SSA reported that as of December 2012, there were 8.8 million disabled workers, 1 million disabled adult children and 255,472 disabled widows and widowers receiving SSDI benefits. Benefitspro.com reported that the states with the highest rates of disability beneficiaries include Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi and West Virginia.

The average age for a beneficiary in 2012 was 53, with men accounting for a higher number of recipients than women. According to the SSA, the average monthly SSDI benefit amount was $1,134.86.

While these numbers may seem high, you have to keep in mind that the U.S. has an estimated population of 313.9 million and has some of the most restrictive disability standards in the world. The bottom line is that SSDI and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are critical to economic stability.

According to AARP, Inc., formerly the American Association of Retired Persons, for every dollar of Social Security benefits paid out, $2 of economic output is generated for the country.
