Federal Disability Hiring At Highest Level In 32 Years

According to DisabilityScoop, the number of federal workers with disabilities has increased to its highest level in nearly three decades.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management said in a report that the federal government added 16,653 new employees with disabilities during the 2012 fiscal year, bringing the total to nearly 220,000.

This is the greatest number of people with disabilities that have been employed in the last 32 years by the government. Workers with disabilities accounted for 11.89 percent of the federal workforce at the end of the 2012 fiscal year, according to DisabilityScoop, a full percentage point gain over the previous year.

As we reported recently, President Barack Obama and his administration have pushed federal agencies to hire more disabled workers; in 2010, Obama signed an executive order demanding that the government add more than 100,000 disabled workers by 2015.

“Since President Obama issued his executive order in 2010, we’ve made substantial progress in hiring and retaining people with disabilities over the past three years,” Katherine Archuleta, director of the Office of Personnel Management, said in a press release. “This work is enabling the federal government to continue to develop as a model employer for people with disabilities.”

Many disabled people who are searching for work and cannot find it through the federal government may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, which are determined based on a person’s work history.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses two different tests to determine benefit eligibility including the “Duration of Work Test” and the “Recent Work Test”, which take into account how long you have worked as well as how recently in order to determine whether you qualify for disability benefits.
